Ah, here we go. Something we can all enjoy together. I think a lot of us hate a lot of characters. Hate is actually an easy thing to do. Simply not feeling a main character can get the full hatred of some people. For me, it’s all about how they functioned in the story. Some characters are designed to be hated while others I hated didn’t quite live up to their expected roles. The fun thing about writing something like this is that hate often becomes a cycle and I hope you won’t hate me for hating on these characters. Let’s over do this one as well. Per my usual style, why list one hated character when I can do a lot of them. I did 37 characters on my favorite character list. I’ll do another thirty seven here.
Plot twist, this’ll be a countdown.
There’s nothing to be impartial about here. It’s time for the hate to take over. Once again, the process is simple. I browsed my animelist then listed down characters that I remember hating so much upon watching the show. Just seeing the title of the show invokes hatred in me as I remember these characters.

Why? The lesbian love between the characters.
Lol, lesbian characters. Big deal. You hate lesbian characters? Nope. I hate the director. In the show, there are actually three guys who just happened to be the perfect pair for the characters. They also had the same bubbly interaction among them and one can only wonder what if they were paired with the main characters. The director claimed that romance would be a distraction for the anime so he ultimately cut it. In the original source, the six characters actually ended up together. The director wanted them to rub faces with each other instead. I do not like these particular characters rubbing faces because it robbed us of the opportunity to fully experience the full potential of the original source. The director is actually a big fan of cock blocking male characters since he did the same thing to another anime he directed called Mouretsu Pirates. Girl on girl is okay but the whole thing felt forced and I think option A worked better. You know, like how it was supposed to be.
From: Hyouka
Why? He’s gay.
He just rubs me wrong. Character wise, he is pretty good being a lively member of the literary club. The problem is this nagging suggestive thing the show keeps making. He is also a member of the sewing club, he loves to wear flamboyant costumes and he rejected one fine girl for nothing really. One and one adds up to two for me and I do think this bastard loves dogs more than cats. There’s nothing wrong with that but he should dial his energy down a notch. When I was watching the show, the subtle hints really bothered me and it often distracted me to enjoy the show.
From: Soul Eater
Why? Her voice. That voice is grating.
I have nothing against her. I like her character and that twist at the end where he was revealed as a weapon as well. I just don’t like her voice. Sure, it’s unique but it’s hard to get used to. It’s like a bland duck quacking. It ruined the anime for me but thankfully, Excalibur is too awesome to hate.
From: Honey and Clover
Why? Immature girl who rejected two loveable guys.
There are a lot of characters that I do not understand. Their role in the show just feels questionable. You’ll see a lot of characters like that in this list. Hagumi is a head scratcher for me. She was the apple in the eye of the two main characters. Despite her small stature, she seemed to be mature enough to keep leading them on. She acts all cute and innocent but she knows just how much these two dudes care about her. They gaze at her like an expensive doll at a toy window and I don’t really understand where she fits in the equation. One of the characters went on a journey to find himself. Another struggled with his personal problems and grew from the experience. Their other two friends had life changing experiences as well. One was rejected and she tried her best to pick the broken pieces and put them back together. Another had a mature relationship with his teacher as he grows to understand just how complicated relationships are.
As for Hagu, she was just there. She was literally just something people gazed at and she doesn’t really feel that human. All her monologues feel empty when her own personal growth isn’t part of the story. She felt like a sore thumb in an otherwise outstanding anime and I was always bothered by her as I was growing up. Maybe not all of us experience life changing moments in our life or maybe she was really just a plot device, either way, I don’t like her that much.
From: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Why? Dio overshadowed him.
The first ever Jojo is a weak ass hero who only showed feat of strengths during dire moments. As a character, he was really just a step ladder for the antagonist, Dio. Our main villain is one hell of a character. He is cunning, manipulative and evil down to the bone. He would kill his own family just to get what he wants and he just seems to be greater than Jonathan. Of course, this was part of the story. Setting up Jonathan as the weaker being, it feels all the more better when good clashes with evil and good wins. Still, Jonathan’s English gentleman personality often shows his weakness that enemies always exploit. After all, in the end, Dio won when he was able to capture Jonathan’s body and lived to see two generations of Jojo fight him.
From: Guilty Crown
Why? A dull mascot with no real role in the story.
Her voice is great. That’s it. Storywise, Inori is bland often being more of a distraction than anything else. She had no definite role in the story. She worshipped this charismatic dude in one scene openly rejecting the main character’s existence then somehow did a switch to following the main character around as if he was her trusted companion. She looked like a deer in headlights, to be honest. Aside from being eye candy, I don’t really think she did anything of value in the show beside the OP sequence. Still, I am not a fan of bland worthless characters. Might as well give us a pot of flowers and Ican guarantee that pot is ten times more interesting that Inori.
From: Mirai Nikki
Why? Bland Main Character
By all means, I do believe that Yuno is the main character of this anime. She keeps resetting the game like the mad psychopath stalker that she is. As for Yuki, he really didn’t do anything. Like a helpless sheep, he just clung to the strongest one that won’t kill him. He didn’t grow as a character and he only changed when the story demanded it. He also never wised up that Yuno is only using him even intentionally deluding himself that Yuno got his back. Even with his friends violently shaking him to get him to understand, the bastard is too dumb to understand. It’s a shame he didn’t die. I really wanted him to die.
I listed Gasai Yuno in my favorite character list. It’s funny how I have Yuki in my hated character list. That’s how worthless this guy is.
From: Mysterious Girlfriend X
Why? Their fetish made me throw up.
You will see a lot of relationships in this list. I am a sucker for a good love story but some show’s attempt to be different really tested me. In Mysterious Girlfriend X, the two couple shares the same love for tasting other people’s drool. They have a magical connection with it. The girl would often put some drool on her fingers then let the guy lick it off. It is pretty f*cking disgusting. The whole show is actually about the weird tendencies of the girl thus the title but this drool thing is really not something I can enjoy. I actually vomited while watching one episode where the guy drank the girl’s drool she placed in a test tube. It was hour old spit and he was drinking it as if it was nothing. The whole idea really made me vomit. I am pretty open minded when it comes to most things but something about this particular fetish don’t sit right with me.
From: Thermae Romae
Why? Ancient Roman bowing down to modern Japanese toiletries.
The whole premise is actually just stupid fun but there is this sense of “oh, Japan is amazing!” in how each episode focused on Japanese toilets. I mean really, where does it end? Others might find it amusing but seeing an ancient roman time travel to discover modern Japanese plumbing magnificent is as stupid as it gets. He even gushed at hot spring boiled eggs as if it was the greatest thing he ever tasted and I just find the whole thing absolutely dumb and a bit insulting.
From: Code Geass
Why? She masturbated using a table.
Of all the characters I do not understand, Nina takes the cake. She seems to be a mentally unstable person and it makes her a tad dangerous. I think hating her would actually be a compliment since she is nuttier than a fruitcake. I love the Nina X Table scene but everything else she does just seems insanely odd.
From: The Law of Ueki
Why? Out of place character.
Hideyoshi is this monkey looking assh*le that joined team Ueki in their battle to get one wish from God. He was really just plucked from the street and he magically became part of the cast. Anyone else would really be better than him mainly because he doesn’t really do much in the anime. He even admitted to being useless. We have this amazing kind hearted hero who can turn trash into trees. We have this comrade of his that has mastered turning towels to steel into a useful combat weapon. We have this endearingly cute girl who was suddenly given a power that can make anyone obey her after doing a weird pose and she provide comedic lighthearted moments for this Shounen piece. This other member? He can make pictures talk via ventriloquism and he absolutely offered nothing of value for his team.
From: Still, this world is beautiful
Why? The fearsome conqueror is a spoiled child.
I don’t mind that the age gap between the characters is disturbingly wide. The problem I had with the anime is how they portrayed the king. He was a small child who had a traumatic past that turned him into a ruthless conqueror. The anime didn’t really do anything to convince you of such since he just acted like a dumb kid of his age in the show. Ruthless conqueror? Not really. More like a spoiled child who is having serious mommy issues and basically trying to bang his mom through his supposed wife.
From: Code Geass
Why? I consider her the lump that needed to be removed.
Of all the compelling characters of Code Geass, and that involves Nina, Shirley is ultimately the one that feels out of place. With her role, the only thing she could really do is die and I was actually fine with that. She resembles Lelouch’s innocence and pining for the days gone by. So by killing her, the metaphorical innocence of our dear lead would be crushed like a bully destroying a child’s toy. Euphemia actually took this role in the first season and this basically left Shirley with nothing left to do. Sure, she still died in the end but her exit was awkward since the situation at that point no longer needed him. Lelouch was already at a point of no return so the personal drama leading up to her death is a bit exhausting. Her role is really only a plot device for viewer’s to inject more emotion to the new character, Rolo, who is also awkwardly out of place.
I hate Shirley though. She represents the classic Gundam stereotype of being the lead’s other love interest that often just dies. I do not like her stereotype after seeing it done so many times. Her death meant something but it’s too little too late for the second season.
From: Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!
Why? An underdog story shouldn’t have so many consecutive losses.
It was trying to present a story of never giving up in the brutal world of women puroresu. Sakura is this idol who turned wrestler who always tapped out to her opponent’s finishing maneuver. She came to wrestling to avenge her friend and her pride but something about seeing her f*cking lose so many f*cking times kind of killed the whole point of the story. I think she went up to fifty consecutive losses and it was just ridiculous. Still, she was painted as this hopeful rookie out to rock the world of wrestling. How? Having the record for most losses? Sakura represented all the tough girls in the world by not backing down but I think the message is muddled and crapped on when you let her constantly lose.
From: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders
Why? This dude never fights someone by himself in this Shounen anime.
The series did something new by having characters summon warriors to fight each other. These are called Stands and only stands can defeat other stands. You can still kill the owner though and the stand would die. If you cut the stand’s head off though then the same damage would apply to the user. The concept for these new powers sound solid if only it didn’t follow up a story where a guy single handedly defeated three resurrected immortal vampires during world war II while befriending Nazis and ending his fight on top of a volcano. That was epic. Jotaro fighting his opponents by just standing there and letting his Stand do all the work seems like a lazy tying compared to what the previous Jojo did, which was epic!! Jotaro is cool but it wouldn’t hurt him to actually fight someone using his own fists.
From: Code Breaker
Why? Idealistic woman who knows only how to talk and not act.
Sakura is the lead character in this movie where morally lacking cool dudes with super powers kill people and create chaos with no trace of conscience behind their actions. She was the human anchor to these inhuman super powered freaks. In the anime though, all she does is talk. “Don’t kill people, that’s bad” Ok but she tagged along during certain missions of the guys and basically does nothing while the characters kill innocent people. She is skilled enough to at least save someone but instead, literally watched a father burn to death. I mean really, talking does little when you’re talking to serial killers. She should’ve put her arms out and fight. Maybe not enough for her to get killed but maybe enough to sacrifice herself to push some conscience back into the killers. Hearing her talk got tiresome after you realize how much blood is in her hands as well. This hurts even more when you realize her backstory is actually like the killers. She’s a cold hearted girl who grew up with some warmth she never would’ve gotten if people didn’t care about her. The studio really f*cked up her character and her lack of value in the show ultimately made this gripping manga into a massive waste of an anime.
From: Shiki
Why? He’s annoying.
Some characters are meant to be hated. This was the case for Masao. Hating him would actually be a compliment. He’s a snot nosed immature kid who does a lot of crying and running in the series. He was a stupid guy you wanted to slap. Even after turning into a vampire, Masao was a sad individual. He lacks a backbone, talks without thinking and he got his ass beat by her sister when he was a vampire. It was his constant bickering and crying like a little b*tch that’ll get under your skin though.
From: Full Metal Panic
Why? He just wouldn’t die.
Again, another compliment. Gauron is the villain for Full Metal Panic. He was the typical bad guy who is ruthless and likes to spread fear onto people. He gets off on it. The thing I hate about Gauron is that he was still the bad guy in the second season. He was promptly defeated in the first season but then you see him in a hospital bed still directing fear into people using a twin assassin I think he trained himself. Gauron is an under appreciated mastermind and I hate him for that.
From: Kill la Kill
Why? A poor fan service heavy version of Simon from TTGL.
I mentioned Mako in my favorite list because she was somewhat original. Ryuuko isn’t. She is literally Simon with a curvier body and bouncing pairs of boulders. She lacks the emotional growth and hero’s journey that Simon had. The dude experienced the loss of a close friend and his lover, Ryuuko experienced running away after being fairly beaten then came back, not stronger, but relying on the secret powers of her uniform. She’s a lazy character who acts cool but someone you can’t really cheer for. I think the fact that two other characters overshadow her and the second half eventually features this mother daughter story about aliens without her in it just proves how worthless of acharacter this girl is.
Seriously, all she does is strip and she isn’t really good at that as well.
From: Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera
Why? Outdated delinquent humor
Go Nagai is considered the father of mecha. He is also among the very first to introduce Ecchi as a staple genre. At the time, censorship for manga is really strict and it’s hard to believe Japan didn’t approve of nudity. Nagai was among those who wanted to make a statement. Screw you, I’ll make an Ecchi manga. Of course, standards are still tame back then so what we got is Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera. It’s a show about tentacles, an always naked female character, nonsensical story and comedy so outdated that it hurts. The things that were funny back then aren’t really funny now. This was a hard anime to watch. Ultimately, it was the annoying lead character that ruined it for me. He wasn’t likeable yet you are subjected to episodes with absolutely no plot and this annoying lead just stripping someone or acting like an idiot. It’s very hard to finish the show and once I did, I swore to myself to forever hate the main character.
From: Golden Time
Why? Idiotic love triangle
Koko is this repulsive stalker who has a smoking hot body. Banri is this guy who is recovering from amnesia having a conflict between his past self and his current self. Nana is Banri’s close lover from the past. Koko is his girlfriend now. Banri is now forced to choose between a borderline insane stalker spoiled girlfriend over a level headed supportive friend. This is the most frustrating love triangle ever and it’s because our main characters are a bunch of children trying to be nice to each other. Nana is this really nice girl who is willing to let go of her past to make Banri happy but you were really waiting for the time where she’ll realize she want the guy all to herself. Banri is this confused child though who seem to be having an argument with himself. I understand his personal problem but he was like a child unable to grasp the complexity of his situation and just selfishly doing what he wants. The thing that sucks the most though is that he actually enjoy Koko’s company. She has a nice body but she acts like a child, stalks Banri, checks his cellphone without his permission, constantly visits his apartment, calls him nonstop and gets jealous at any girl near him. Banri doesn’t mid though because he’s a stupid ass sh*t. So many wrong things with the characters that it really is the most annoying love triangle I have ever seen.
From: Dusk Maiden of Amnesia
Why? Horror themed love story
This anime is about a ghost that is in love with a normal boy. Their relationship is more of a teasing borderline ecchi affair and it was so out of place for this horror anime. It had malignant ghosts, creepy hallways, a dark and damp setting and a flirty relationship between to horny teens. It just didn’t feel right. The whole thing about the girl being a ghost is fine but the scary undertone of the anime is often ruined by scenes where the girl and the boy would flirt in the classroom. It’s pretty stupid. The whole love angle also feels a bit forced because the guy is a submissive type while the ghost is the flirty “unbutton the top of your pants” kind of slut. Any ounce of creepy factor achieved by the atmosphere and the story is often nulled by the two horny kids. There is a time and place to flirt and in the silent hallways of a creepy school in the dead of the night isn’t really one of those places.
From: Bokura ga Ita
Why? Teenage immaturity and angst perfectly displayed.
This is another compliment. You’ll feel only two things for this couple. You will love it as you can relate to their on-off relationship as they struggle to come to terms with the problem set in front of them. You will hate them though because they’re a couple of immature kids forcing love on each other. It’s a very realistic love story that I do admire but I also totally hate. Nanami is the typical vulnerable sheep but she prefers the bad boy over the concerned friend who helps her during her low moments. Motoharu is a prick who slept with his girlfriend’s sister after the woman died. Throughout the series, he keep trying to find a substitute lover for his dead gf and poor Nanami is left feeling like a second placer.
And yet, they still love each other. The cute moments are high and the painful moments are somehow even better as their unusual relationship somehow keeps on blossoming. As a viewer, it got annoying when you know Nanami can do better. I guess love is hard to explain to onlookers when you both really love each other. It’s a lesson I learned from this wonderful show. I still hate the two main characters. Let’s just have a nice wish fulfillment anime instead of something so truthfully raw next time.
From: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Why? Morally lacking awesome villain
This is another compliment. Kyuubey is a wonderful villain. He just does his job. It just so happens that this job involves subjecting poor girls to a vast amount of psychological torture. The beautiful thing is that Kyuubey doesn’t really understand why girls are experiencing pain. He granted their wishes and they are now working it off. It’s a good deal. He is an alien life force that doesn’t understand human emotion so he comes off as an ignorant cute fluffy thing just giving girls a hellish life. He is also indestructible and very persistent with his mission. I’m not really sure how the movie transpired but I sure do wish at last Kyuubey died in those three installments.
From: Working!
Why? If there are two characters who I wish would just skip the fore play and f*ck, it’ll be these two.
Mahiru is scared of guys automatically punching their faces when someone gets close to her. Souta is a masochist. Their relationship works wonderfully. The problem is that it never really progressed. It’s the same thing over and over until it gets tiresome. At some point, someone needs to pin someone and just end it all. I find their relationship funny but it overstayed its welcome with its stagnant progression. I was so disgusted with their lack of development that I even stubbornly refuse to watch the second season up to this day.
From: Vampire Knights
Why? The anime version of Bella from Twilight
Vampire Knight is really the same thing as Twilight only it came first. It’s a hollow show with just hot guys doing some random crap or whatever. They all swarm around the same girl and all she does is just be entranced in their handsome gaze. I fell asleep watching this anime because it is really boring. Yuuki is vapid character. She offers nothing of value and the show keep pushing forth emotions towards her yet it just really doesn’t click. She sucks, this anime sucks and I absolutely detest its existence.
From: Nagi no Asukara
Why? Childish romance among five childhood friends
They have a much childish relationship that any other in this list. Their complicatedly dumb love story is really just a product of PA Works not being able to tell a proper love story. It started from their childhood days up until they were adults and the story never really matured with them. They were kids having a puppy love relationship so shallow that it’s not worth sitting through twenty four episodes of.
From: Accel World
Why? He scored the hottest girl on the show
Let’s call it jealousy. I honestly don’t think this pairing should exist.
From: Diabolik Lovers
Why? Submissive bland character
Yui is a girl who gets bitten by five vampires in the entire run of the series. She doesn’t fight back and she basically just lay there getting violated by a bunch of men. It’s upsettingly stupid because the whole thing reminds me of a bad porn movie. The girl walks in the room the guy is in, he pins her after a good smack talking then proceed to just bite her neck or legs or whatever place they prefer. Do this twelve times and you have one of the dumbest lead in an anime ever. She is pretty though. I’ll give her points for that.
From: Phi Brain Puzzle of God 2
Why? His motivation for killing the main character is because he missed a play date
All the villains of Phi Brain sucks. The third villain’s motivation is her intense love for this dude the main characters hang out with. FreeCell’s reason is the most pathetic though. His mother died when he was supposed to have a play date with our main. He never came and now he whole heartedly believes that he killed his mom. By not showing, he killed his mother. Yes, it’s that stupid. If I was writing this show, I could easily think of ten things better than such a lame ass excuse to kill someone. He was such an awesome looking villain as well. It’s such a shame he is a pretty pathetic one. I remember his grand plan was to trap the main character in a never ending game so he can finally have the play date he missee when they were young. Seriously stupid.
From: Brothers Conflict
Why? The ultimate deer in headlights character
She has eleven half-brothers trying to bang her and she just stares at them like a dumb f*ck. Ema is the very worst character you can ever watch because she has absolutely no personality, she is submissive and she just has this dumb look in her face at every moment of the show. How can you not hate such a stupid character? Her little talking pet squirrel (who also can bang her if you played the game) has more personality than her. It’s appalling someone like her even exists. Basically the human version of a paint drying. That’s actually more interesting than her. I take it back.
From: School Days
Why? The one character who we all wish died, actually died.
I love School Days and hating Makoto is part of the fun. He dated two girls and then chose one, cheated with another girl and basically created a sh*t storm with a lot of scorned lovers. The result? Well, you have to see it for yourself. I love how this anime started out as a romance and just slowly turned into one upsetting show. Makoto’s douche baggery actually made the whole experience ten times better since nine of the twelve episodes of this anime is slow paced boring stuff.
From: Shia Inuko-san
Why? Her entire existence.
No. Just no. This character should never have been created. F*ck to hell whoever made her.
From: Sword Art Online
Why? I just hate her.
She represented the direction the anime took that I really hate. This action packed show is actually just another harem centered light novel with a cool concept. The main bulk of show is actually about Kirito hanging out with a bunch of girls until he settled with Asuna. The dungeon exploring and stuff like that was replaced with Kirito having fun with a bunch of girls. It’s a questionable progression. The worst thing though is how he eventually decided to be with Asuna spending his days as if they’re husband and wife happily together in a log cabin in the forest. What the hell, right?
Asuna grinds me the wrong way though. She is a female lead in a show that doesn’t require one. I even cheered her death because I always think dying was the perfect role suited for her.
From: K-On
Why? The very definitions of moe blobs.
Moe blobs are characters that has no definite personality or traits that make them unique. All they have is an overwhelming amount of cuteness. K-On, to me, felt like it robbed a bank and everyone just went “awww” because the characters can wear cat ears and basically do that a bunch of time in one episode. K-On has no story. It’s just cute girls doing cute things. The characters offer nothing meaningful and it’s really only carried by the flawless animation of Kyoto Animation. Take that away and you have one dimensional character that knows nothing expect to blush at the right moment.
I actually don’t mind their lack of personality. The thing I hate is that they started it all. K-On is a phenomenon of cuteness. KyoAni gave us a show with no story, just cute characters and we gave them our undying devotion because of it. So for the decade after K-On was released, other studios wanted to bank of the same formula. Absolutely zero story with just cute girls is one of the most laziest thing I have ever seen in anime. I grew up with Kino’s Journey, indulged in Monster, got my mind blown with Death Note, gasped loudly at Zero Requiem and then you gave me a show with no value except cute girls drinking tea? It was the ultimate middle finger that lasted for a good decade. K-On’s effect has only started to die down now and I for one hope everyone forgets the moe revolution even happened.
From: Mahouka Kouko no Rettousei
Why? The Ultimate definition of a Mary Sue
Mary Sue characters are those who seem to be perfect. They solve problems with very little logic from the plot, their personality is flawless and the wont die even if they get hailed by raining bullets. This guy really rubs me the wrong way. The show is just about his exploits doing things perfectly. He is a brilliant inventor, his skills on the battlefield is unmatched, he is able to solve scientific conundrums in one episode, all the girls like him, all the guys wants to be with him, he can see an enemy’s plan in advance, every trap is easily foreseen and he has this cool guy attitude about him that just screams perfect. The rest of the cast just stand in awe of him, the villains are no match for him and he has never been overwhelmed by anyone in the anime. It seems that the author of the light novel basically masturbated at the thought that such a character can exist. You do not make such a flawless character if you don’t feel you aren’t overcompensating for something.
The cherry on the cake? He can resurrect the dead. As in no characters can die because he can bring them back to life. No main character should be this perfect. It just isn’t right.
From: Zettai Bouei Leviathan
Why? They are vapid one dimensional monstrosities.
The entire show is actually a worthless show with absolutely nothing of relevance to offer. This is Studio Gonzo as a whole. They’re a meaningless existence on life support begging for someone to pull their plug. I absolutely detest this anime and it’s actually the reason that made me re-evaluate my life and stated working again. You know how you get an epiphany after experiencing something? Well, this show did that for me. Watching something so goddamn vapid really gave me the motivation to not be the same worthless sh*t this show represents. I think this show was just created to promote a mobile app game so this was an afterthought of a show. It’s actually the character’s inability to be relevant that ultimately did it for me though. They have dragon powers and that’s basically it. Their personality is zero, their role to the show is zero and these three girls are just three big zeroes in a show I would gladly rate a zero.
