Oh come on. This list is really stupid and I am stupid to actually do it. I don’t have a favorite anime character, this should be evident after the way I straw man my way out of day two’s favorite anime choice. I listed down one anime for all forty three genres and it was a product of absolute wasted time. I always believe though that if it’s worth doing, then it’s worth overdoing. Overdoing it, I shall. So a character for every genre? No, that’s stupid. Everything is stupid. This suspicious link is stupid! I seriously don’t have a favorite anime character. At least not just one. I always consider overdone stereotypes and overused tropes in characters when I write a review so I often kill my love for a character whenever I write one. I am also not really that drawn towards characters when I watch an anime. I really just go for the story and the characters really just function in that story.
How about this? Thirty seven anime characters I like. It’s not in any particular order. They’re all characters I particularly gravitate to for one reason or another. Why thirty seven? It’s because this sixty day challenge is an exercise of randomness and boredom. Listing down thirty seven characters is a great way to keep the spirit of this anime challenge. Also, I will only choose one character in one anime to keep things fair since I could list all the cast of Attack on Titan here if I don’t limit my choices.
Alright then, this is another needlessly overdrawn post by yours truly. I’ll make this quick though since I am having a bad Wednesday and I just want to make it through to tomorrow at this point. I skimmed my anime list and basically these characters are the ones I am reminded of when I saw the title.
The god of sex is this stupid guy that visited a thirty year old virgin and decided to give him tips on how to land a girlfriend. The anime is based off an actual self-help book titled “health and physical education for thirty year olds” that was turned into a manga and then got an anime adaptation. He gives tips on how to properly grope a breast, how to dress for a date and even how some sexual positions provide more pleasure. He also considered a thirty year old virgin to be sad so he even offered himself to the virgin and even his small brother just so the dude can pop his cherry. It’s a funny show with some actually helpful tips to provide.
Some characters are just batsh*t crazy and then there are characters you aren’t really sure how batsh*t crazy or if they are beyond bat sh*t crazy. Forcing a guy to wear a girls’ used gym clothes, how bat sh*t crazy is that? Sawa is one beautiful yandere. She’s hard to read, scary to appreciate and too off the radar to understand but her teenage drive and her genuine attraction to the guy he is blackmailing just makes you want to see her go bat sh*t crazy because she’s likeable that way. The anime turned her into an orangutan with a wig but she looks stunning in the manga, an actual trait yanderes usually poses. But the debate of whether the anime is good or bad is really a subjective thing.
It’s that show about a girl that died and now haunts her friends to help her move on. Her presence is bringing up some conflicts that stayed buried along with her though. One of those conflicts is between Atsumu and our main character. He likes Menma, the dead girl but the girl is more drawn towards Jinta, the main character. Atsumu always felt neglected and this surfaced up once again when the ghost of Menma chose to ask for help with Jinta and nobody else. He is a smug douche though so he does deserve to suffer but something about him walking around in a dress at night on the place where Menma drowned just makes you want to feel sorry for him. He is not the most compelling character in the show but Menma’s death really affected all of them and Atsumu was the first one to show just how much the death changed him.
She’s the typical brainiac with the ability to fill up holes. Characters in the show have super powers and her powers are the opposite of her lover who can create holes in any space. Mix is a cute tsundere but I really only like her because of two things. First, her character design. The color purple and the large amounts of ribbons on her makes her a one of a kind character. With her orange hair and those glasses, she easily won me over. Secondly, her boobs. They’re big. What?!
I like her because of her adorable voice and because she sneezes funny. Some of the funniest gags in the anime also involve Osaka like the knife scene and the shoe on the truck scene.
He is this serial killer that was aboard the moving train that also has kidnappers, a dangerous street gang, a group of white suited terrorists and a bunch of immortal people. He was last seen with a gun pointed at his face and then the reveal that the humble train employee is actually a deranged killer is amazing. The next time we see him, his body is covered in someone else’s blood and he’s fighting another deranged man on top of the moving train.
This maid walks into a bar. You probably heard this joke before. Anyways, she blew up the bar and killed everyone in it. This maid is actually a trained killer with a sadistic demeanor and so unstoppable, an army confronted her and the b*tch still won. The OVAs highlighting her as the main character is filled with a lot of killing and poor soldiers dying before they even know what hit them.
There are a lot of miserable stories in Bokurano about the poor children forced to pilot this giant robot. You see, they die after they pilot it because the robot consumes their life energy. Forced into a wall knowing they would die, a lot of characters really let loose. When Chizuru found out she was soon to pilot the robot, she decided to confront her teacher, the man that impregnated her, and decided to kill her with the giant robot. Her older sister stopped her though because she loved the dude. Instead, she took all her frustrations on the enemy robot and died a miserable life. In the manga, she actually killed innocent civilians and it was explained more thoroughly how the teacher exploited her and treated her like trash after she got pregnant. The enemy robot in the manga is also like a womb with a fetus in it so she was metaphorically killing the baby in her tummy. Her graphic story is really the kind of miserable tales littered in the anime but more celebrated in the manga.
I grew up idolizing her and her sexy cute outfits. She is also one of the few CLAMP characters that didn’t kill anyone in her story so that’s a plus. She was innocent and I was innocent when I watched her anime. I felt like we grew up together since she actually did mature in Tsubasa Chronicles where she turned into a pathetic miserable damsel in distress and I grew up as Karuhi posting anime blogs in myIGN. We both kinda screwed up at some point, huh?
He’s the guy perpetually trapped in the friend zone. This pink haired hunk of beef cake is often relegated to the side lines because Chihaya is more focused on reuniting with her childhood friend named Arata. Taichi just takes everything in stride though and decided to just be there for her in everything she does. It’s heartbreaking how much Chihaya doesn’t know she has a hunk of beef at her side and it’s more frustrating how she is so hung up on her childhood friend. I do believe if the roles were reversed then Arata would be feeling neglected but still, the good guy in the friend zone as hot as he is is just a sad story all around.
She’s cute and adorable. She also sings a nice version of one of my favorite ending songs in anime.
Look, I like Lelouch but if I had to choose, I think I like Euphemia more. She was this pacifist who really just wanted peace and equality. Her no violence approach is idealistic but not really effective, still she was a beacon of hope for the mistreated masses. Don’t you just love it when that symbol of hope is the one that ordered the mass killing of innocent people? Euphemia’s order, her death and Lelouch’s face of absolute regret is one of the high points of the entire anime for me.
I mean, c’mon, for gawdsakes I don’t need a reason to like him. He’s Spike. That’s it.
A lot of people hate her because her fights are often paced with a lot of “oh woe me, I’m so weak because I’m a girl but I’ll fight back no matter what because I can, damn it”. She just really whines a lot and it does put a wrinkle on the experience. I like her though because my favorite fight involved her and the first level four demon in the anime. I like her because of her sexy legs as well. She is rocking a pair of hot ones, damn.
A notebook with the ability to kill people by writing down their name is a great premise for an anime. When you give that notebook to a sociopath with a god complex then you just made one of the most revolutionary anime ever created. Light is both likeable and unlikeable at the same time. He kills as if he is better than most people but he only kills criminals. He is so smart that the chess game he had with L is one of the best thing you can watch in an anime. I like him more because he won that battle. L is cool but I like it more when the bad guy wins. Having him die at the hands of L 2.0 ruins it a bit though but I’ll just take my potato chip and eat it.
He is the ultimate playboy able to swoon any girl he desires. In the near future, this guy actually impregnated 100 girls that gave birth to 100 ultimate playboys that then impregnate 100 girls that continued the chain. His penis exploded the population and I think that’s awesome. In the actual story though, I love how his other demeanor is able to hook three girls while his normal self can’t seem to nail one.
This was a hard choice because I like a lot of characters in this anime. Mikado stands out the most because he was really the most normal character in the show. This makes him the most abnormal and I kinda grew suspicious of him since episode one. Knowing this normal guy is actually the leader of one of the largest gang in the city is one of the greatest surprises I have seen in any anime. I cannot wait for the second season. Yes people, another season is already planned to come out in 2015.
You will cry when you watch this anime so beware. This is about a story of robots and their sad stories serving humans. The story is diverse but they are all sad. The saddest I have seen involves THX. He serves this family with only a father and son. The son is really close to THX filling the gap the father is supposed to fill. THX over step his bounds though when the father overheard him giving advice to the son about how to understand his father and the father is really just too busy with work to spend time with him. The father soon gave THX orders to never speak again. Unable to speak, the son hated him without knowing the reason and THX watched the son grow up completely hating him unable to do anything about it. I f*cking cried, yo.
Alexander the Great in this anime is a scene stealer. Everything he speaks is epic and everything he does is reminiscent of a true conqueror. It’s a shame he is completely weak though compared to the other warriors but still, his presence alone is enough to draw attention to him. He also gave an epic speech about how to be a true king that I still remember to this day.
This girl is able to capture the affection of every member of the Soma family. It’s because she is caring and nurturing and she always know the right words to tell a troubled person. Tohru might not seem much but her commendable attitude will make you grow fond of her as well. It sucks she chose the cat though.
I don’t need a big reason. His death was tragic. Tragic!
He cross dresses and he also has this idealistic plan to connect people. You can tell his plan lacks a few dimension but you have to admire how enthusiastic he is about his social networking site helping everyone in need. It clashes brilliantly with the antagonist’s idea that everyone is a troll on the internet and the main character’s idea that true genuine human beings will help each other without any prodding. Seeing him fail at achieving his ideals is pretty cool to watch.
I don’t remember this show. It’s a cool Shounen but the details are all murky now. I just remember this person:
This is a guy. I think his gender both confused and marveled young kids growing up.
This show is about his coming of age. He’s an urban guy who transferred into an agricultural school because he just wanted to get away. He was not prepared for a school about how to be a farmer though as we see him squirm at the sight of a headless moving chicken, crying over the death of a pig and slowly finding his place in the last place he expected to look. This was created by the author of Full Metal Alchemist and I think her presentation of Hachiken both as an identifiable character and a guy worth rooting for is absolutely amazing.
Here, have a GIF:
Ok then, Kintaro is a loveable doofus who is actually travelling to learn more about life or something. Anyways, in the six episode run of the show, he met six different women and he soon tried to involve himself with their life by helping them with their problems. From helping a girl with her lying cheating boyfriend to convincing a girl that masturbating on a motorcycle isn’t the best thing in the world, Kintaro was an awesome hero. At the end of each episode, he also lands the girl but continues on with his journey before the girl can catch up to him. I love how openly perverted he is and how simple minded he looks. You’ll never think that he is actually a guy that completed every course of his university before he decided to travel. Hugging toilets isn’t really something a genius would do.
Onizuka is a former bike gang member who decided to become a teacher. He believes that teachers usually give up on someone like him before even giving them a chance so he decided to be that one teacher who will give every student a chance. He is incredibly simple minded though and perverted and he often acts like a thug. Still, amidst all that childlike behavior, this teacher still manages to impart some amazing advice to his students. The stories are relatable which makes it easier to enjoy the show hoping there is someone out there who cares enough just like Onizuka. I think this is one feel good anime I really enjoyed growing up.
Don’t remember a lot from this show. I just know that it made me enjoy seven sleepless nights wondering what the hell I just watched.
I remember Rika though, in all her cute glory, jamming a knife to her throat in a brutal manner.
Amidst all the half-naked girls in sexy school uniforms, I really only enjoyed this anime for all the non Tengen Toppen Gurren Langan elements it had. People call this amazing and the show used this cheap trick of gaining interest by sparking a debate about feminism thanks to the outfits but really, at heart, this is a TTGL remake. It’s not a good one at that. So one non TTGL element this show had is the epileptic rambling of one Mako Mankanshoku. She is a supporting character but she is a scene stealer with her advice during battle. At first, I really hate her but something about her simple easy going personality in a show that takes itself too seriously is enough to make me a fan of hers.
Seriously though, her epileptic ramblings must’ve come from Studio Trigger high on something.
She is a traveller that visits countries and learn about their different customs. She remains an impartial bystander as she witness the on goings of the countries. Sometimes she lends a hand but she often remains neutral. Kino is the calm painting of a river on the foreground while the background is absolute darkness and people strangling each other. The show is a thought provoking piece about human nature, human culture and superstition and the simple baffling ugliness of the world. It also has some deep themes like war, religion and human connection mixed in with some great elements of irony to deliver some of the best short stories you’ll find in anime. I also like Kino because I grew up knowing she was a boy until I heard the Japanese voice and not the English dub.
The story is but a blurry mess now. All I know is that a mercenary and a timid princess swapped bodies. The princess is now one kick ass slaying machine with those incredible red eyes, that awesome sword she carries and the blood soaked torn white gown she wears as she goes wild on some enemies. I love her character design, that’s really the only reason why I like her.
I believe in this equation by heart: cute cat plus cute cat actions equal cute cat GIFs.
He is the anarchist that the psychopass cannot judge. The anime is set in a dystopian setting where people are judged by the psychopass. Over stress indicating you’re about to kill someone or if you have already done so will be picked up by the psychopass and you will be killed on the spot by some law enforcers. Makishima killed a lot of people both directly and indirectly yet the psychopass cannot judge him. He is outside the long reach of the law and he decided to stir up some panic and confusion knowing he’ll never be punished. He’s not just a piece of outlying data though, the dude is also smart using pawns and exploiting loop holes and weaknesses at every opportunity. He would be Light Yagami without a death note and I just love how cool this dude is.
He’s the guy with no sense of direction and he turns into a cute little black pig when wet. He adores this girl named Akane who is engaged to the main character. You always see him fighting with Ranma for revenge and in hopes to be the one engaged to Akane. Too bad for him, it looks like the two is set but Akane has this cute pet pig that pops up from time to time. She would let the adorable thing near her chest and even take it with her to the bathroom. Ryoga is both one miserable bastard and a lucky assh*ole and I kinda grew up massively jealous of him. The fact that he can’t win against Ranma but can score with Akane is like an ideal situation for idiots like me.
This is like a spinoff of Black Jack the anime but it focused on a patient the awesome doctor once saved. I really only remember this girl because she looks like Tifa Lockhart. Oh look, Tifa in a tube top performing complicated surgery to people thanks to her eyes with special powers. The anime is decent but I really only like Ray because she looks like one of the hottest girls I ever played in a JRPG game.
She is a shy and timid girl who is even too scared to talk. Instead, this adorable cuteness would only communicate by text and this girl is actually abusive and very violent in her emails. I love how incredibly bi polar this character is. I think this anime is loaded with eccentric beauties like the overly positive student who sees beauty in even a decomposing dog corpse, the symmetrically obsessed student council president and even the homeroom teacher that is always in despair. Still, my favorite is Meru because I think her character is just genius.
He is a goofy guy who likes to pretend he is a special agent or something. Basically, he is a weirdo who spends his time building a time machine with his friends. They succeeded, they screw up timelines and he regretted everything afterwards. His journey from being a guy who acts like a spoiled child to a depressed guy unable to save someone from dying to a guy losing the one he loves to a guy who experiences a lifetime of emotions in a span of a week is absolutely outstanding. As The Pantless Anime Blogger, this is one of the only two anime I have given a perfect score of ten and his thoroughly fleshed out personality is a big reason for it. His quirky attitude is one thing but his vulnerable helpless state easily won me over knowing such a character can develop such depth.
Much like the Okabe, Watashi also had an incredible personal journey. He wishes to have a rose colored college life and always seem to fail at it. He soon realizes that grass isn’t always that green on the other side as he decided to accept the life he is living now. This anime is a great piece for me about living in the moment. Watashi joined a bunch of clubs and was never content. His little tale is a great example of how to just live life to the fullest. I also live his fast talking style. Shintaro Asanuma gave the best performance of his life voicing this nameless protagonist.
And there you go, a bunch of my favorite characters. I’m going to dial down the rest of the entries now since I’m not really posting every day. They’re more like every other day so I’ll just keep it simple from here on out. If there is a chance to overdo it in some way though then I will do my best to needlessly make it hard on myself. This is also a sick way for me to have fun and decompress.
So who’s your fave anime character? Tell me so I can mock you.
