The Anime Roundup #4

Hello people of this small community. Wassup? What’s that? I was away for four months? Nonsense. I actually invented a time machine by rigorously following John Titor’s step by step procedure on cellphones and the brainwaves and how to synchronize your brainwaves from the past. Time travel doesn’t need a physical time machine, just a device that can barrel your thoughts in the space time continuum. It’s crazy sh*t. Actually, I recently embraced my new persona as an anime blogger in a new place. I recently realized that I was blogging about anime in a video game site pandering to people that just doesn’t care about my passion. I stumbled upon wordpress and the anime community while having a huge dissatisfaction with the way my blog is being received here. So I made a blog and I’ve actually garnered an audience in a short year as oppose to my two and a half year insistence in this site. My passion for anime is finally being received by people that actually care about it. It’s amazing. In just a year, I’ve gained some respect for my writing and I’m actually getting offers to attend shitty anime conventions. Some awesome people are trying to hook me up with press passes for US anime conventions and it breaks my heart when I decline them since I’m in the Philippines. It is on the other side of the world.

I always felt that I have a career in anime blogging and it looks like that can legitimately happen. It’s a long term goal though because I am still not an impartial reviewer. Being objective is impossible, impartial is a negotiable trait though and I’m trying to achieve that. This sounds mean but I never would’ve grown if I stayed in this place. If I ever play video games then maybe I’ll write back here. It’s all good. Here’s a funny thing though. My awesome GIF header is currently bandwidth deprived because people visit my dead blog checking out the anime I talk about. It’s a GIF I worked for hours and you assholes took it down. I also uploaded it in photobucket and that money grabbing sea slug cuts your bandwidth.

I am also getting haunted by my Top 100 anime blog. It’s the one that was a huge collaboration from myIGNers was we compiled our favorite anime. My intention for it really was to serve as a time capsule basically for people to see when they google sh*t years from now. It’s working because I’m still getting comments from that blog complaining how Sword Art Online, an anime that wasn’t even airing when we made the list, isn’t on the list. I’ve marked it as spam but then it got me thinking. myIGN must be missing some good dose of anime and I also promised to come back here from time to time. I actually forgot about the anime weekly project I promised to do here.

Here’s another entry into the Anime Roundup. If you don’t know, I am currently watching and reviewing ALL the anime that is currently released because of my 1000 anime review goal. Right now, I’ve hit 190 and I recently finished the 2012 lineup. Every significant anime from 2012 I have seen and finished. It was a painful experience but also awesome at the same time. 2013 is rolling along nicely so here’s a bunch of new anime that Karuhi personally recommends as great. Let’s do ten because it’s the weekends and I am feeling lazy. Plus, I can pass this off as a way to make up for my four month absence. I mean, time travel adventure.

(KRA) Karuhi Recommends Ten Anime

Girls und Panzer

Premise: Recreational Tank Battles with cute girls

Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QA-qmYJJUA4

On the surface this looks like just another dumb anime about cute girls doing cute things. It seems too hard to believe that it’s actually a tactical tank battle anime with huge elements of WWII and a large collection of awesome tanks. If you’re a fan of WWII or if you’ve ever indulged in a lot of awesome video game cut scenes then you’ll enjoy this anime. The story is shallow. The main appeal of the anime is the tank battles. Certain things are glossed over but when you have cute girls pretending to be Russians operating a bunch of T-34s while singing the Katyusha wartime song then you’ll understand the simple idea of the anime. The history lesson is a bonus in here.

Tamako Market

Premise: Cute girls doing cute things with a cute bird for a mascot

Any KyoAni anime is good. It won’t let you down. This one had a subpar story but the animation, that made this particular studio famous, is present in this show. There’s really not much to tell here so I’ll just post some GIFs here.

Also, the next KyoAni anime is highly anticipated because they finally got rid of cute girls and submerging their viewers on cute nonsense. They will now give us superbly gay things because BL (Boy’s Love ) is a high trend in anime now.

Shin Sekai Yori

Premise: A Sci Fi anime about a microscopic look at human behavior and society. The novel it’s adapted from is considered a “speculative fiction”.

The anime is about a group of friends as they journey through life together. They are all psychics and they live in a psychic society full of traditions and superstitions that both restrict and protect their stable society. The main character gets a glimpse of how evil her society is but also how unbelievably fair it is. It has a strong social commentary and a gripping Sci Fi story. This anime may not seem much at first but you won’t believe how wonderfully structured it is. The story is remarkable and realistic despite the Sci Fi elements. The pacing was slow at first but it gains speed towards a climactic end.

Also, it had same sex making out scenes because the humans of the Shin Sekai Yori world deal with stress by sexing each other and freaking viewers out.

Psycho-Pass

Premise: A dystopia society shaken by an awesome anarchist with the system’s law enforcer dead set on taking him down.

From the dude that gave us Puella Magi Madoka Magica (magical genre with a dark twisted completely nihilistic touch) and Fate Zero (a darker look at the popular visual novel) comes a strong anime possibly the best of 2012. Psycho-Pass is very dark, a bit gory and it stays true to the cop show whodunit theme but adding a dystopian society twist on it. The country of Japan has reached total peace because it adapted a system that enforces the law without the need of human factors called the Sybil System. It’s an objective machine that serves and protect. Japan deems criminals by their psycho-pass that determines how likely they are to become criminals. The main characters are a task force that hunts down the people with criminal psycho passes and deliver justice on them. The show started out with really disturbed criminals being hunt down. The typical psychopaths and the kinds that kills you, tears your body apart then build a statue with it. Of course, there is also the man that believes that the system that protects the people of Japan is actually robbing them of their freedom. He’s a great anarchist that literally wants to see the world burn. It’s an awesome anime and one that completely satisfies.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanajo

Premise: A group of misfits living in an apartment learn to grow together and face problems as a family

This anime is a lovely show about romance and following your dreams. It started out pretty weak but the characters really carry the show. There is a girl that is so talented at painting that she already has a great career while still in high school. She decided to become a mangaka though. She is super talented because she gives everything to her work. She is so dedicated that she cannot function properly and needs a boy to dress her, feed her and wash her hair. It’s romantic, comedy and a bit dramatic. There are some strong themes here and a story that slowly takes shape as you keep watching it. It’s a character driven show that has a lot of emotions.

Cuticle Tantei Inaba

Premise: A hot detective with equally hot friends chase down a talking goat that is the head of an Italian mafia.

This is a slapstick comedy show but with a very uncomfortable twist. It’s full of BL. There are hot guys in this anime and they do a lot of blushing and hugging that looks superbly adorable and highly comedic. It starts out weak because the story is full of nonsense but the show gradually becomes entertaining as you keep watching. Again, nothing much to say here so here’s a GIF.

Yama no Susume

Premise: Cute girls with a hobby for climbing mountains all told in just three minutes

It’s a short show but the production value is ridiculously high. This is a simple show about friendship but told pretty remarkably. It’s also a Slice of Life anime but because of the three minute limitation, the show doesn’t get boring. It’s a cute show about girls with a cute hobby and I’m pretty sure you’d want more of it after you finish it. Three minutes is not enough for such an awesome like this.

Vividred Operation

Premise: Strike Witches in a more manageable story and more eye candy

This anime is about a bunch of cute girls fighting evil by transforming. It’s a magical girl/Sci Fi/Mecha anime that looks weird but the production value is unbelievably high.  It’s also shamelessly pandering to the pedophiles of the world but try to overlook that particular detail. The girls are cute and sexy and they fight pretty awesomely. It also has the typical friendship theme because of the magical girl element. The story is pretty weak and a bit stupid but you can’t deny how awesome and dangerously attractive these little girls are when they transform and fight in their cute outfits.

Also there are blatant “crotch shots” that again, panders to the pedo of the world but hey, we’re all open minded. Right?

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

Premise: A cold girl, only concerned with studying, soon becomes the object of affection of the misunderstood tough guy that scares other people away.

This is your standard Rom-Com anime with a really beautiful premise. The two characters are great oddballs and their relationship is really fun to watch. They are both hard to gauge and the “I like you-I don’t like you” roller coaster relationship of the two is pretty well done. There is also a nice theme of belonging to the right person and a default theme about friendship.

Also, this happened on the first episode. Yeah, I learned how to make GIFs once upon a time.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Premise: Jojo fights a bunch of vampire/zombies in an old school style story of good kicking evil’s ass.

Huge muscled dudes fighting each other. This is actually a very old manga and there are some video games of it released back in the 1990s and such. The fights are nicely told and there is a rather ‘Dragon Ball Z” like presentation to it because it’s conceived during the same era. This one has a better presentation that DBZ though, in my opinion. The stories are outstanding and the battles are epic. They’re literally epics. They share the same exciting appeal as Beowulf and other epics. The anime is heavily western and like any Shounen anime, it won’t be long before you’re hooked watching this. This one, I highly recommend.

And that’s that. See you all on another time I guess. Once I stop feeling lazy, maybe I’ll try to be as active again here but it’s all up in the air. Maybe we can do one big co-op blog again like that top 100 blog. I need some ideas. Anyone interested though? Let me know in the comments.

Of course, let me whore my blog. Visit sometime and check out more anime.  Peace out.
